Changing the world is at the heart of UC Irvine. Students from the School of Medicine are traveling abroad to apply their medical skills in remote areas of underdeveloped countries. To date, our students have participated in the healthcare of citizens in India, Kenya, Vietnam and Peru. Through their travels the students experience global healthcare firsthand. They gain a greater understanding of the medical and humanitarian needs of developing countries and have the opportunity to offer their skills and assistance. The students who are fortunate enough to participate in this program, embark on a truly life-changing experience. They return to UC Irvine with a renewed sense of purpose. Some begin planning for future trips. Others rethink career goals. In an effort to offer this outreach opportunity to more students, the School of Medicine is launching “Change the World,” a program to fund students wishing to offer their skills and services abroad. This program can only be funded through philanthropy. It depends upon the support of School of Medicine alumni, parents, and friends. Your gift of $2,500 will enable one student to experience this opportunity of a lifetime. If you would like to become a part of Change the World, contact UC Irvine Health Advancement at 949-824-9157.
After more than 40 years of teaching, Dr. Robert Leonard has elected to retire from the anatomy theater. The University of California, Irvine has been blessed with his teaching abilities for the past decade. In recognition of his years of service and in order to maintain the level of excellence in the anatomy curriculum, it is the desire of the Dean's Office to establish an Endowed Leonard Lectureship, which will enable an ongoing stream of superior teachers to come to the University of California, Irvine and participate in the ongoing education of our medical students while also providing funds to enhance the teaching of anatomy.
