Health Sciences Compensation Plan

The Health Sciences Compensation Plan (the Plan) was approved by The Regents of the University of California in July 1999. The Guidelines on Occasional Outside Professional Activities by Health Sciences Compensation Plan Participants (Guidelines) were issued by the President on November 23, 1999. The University of California, Irvine, School of Medicine Implementation Procedures, developed and approved in accordance with the Plan and the Guidelines, were effective on July 1, 2000, and updated effective July 1, 2002. School of Medicine faculty are members of the Plan if they hold a University appointment at 51% or greater, funded by the School of Medicine, in any of the following title series: Professor, Professor in Residence, Professor of Clinical ____ (e.g., Medicine), Adjunct Professor, Acting Professor, Clinical Professor, Visiting Professor, Health Sciences School Dean titles and any other title series approved for membership in the Plan by The Regents. Membership in the Plan is a term and condition of employment. Part-time appointments (greater than 51% but less than 100%) are made with the expectation that the Plan member's full-time professional commitment is to the University.

Key components

The Plan requires that all patient care services take place at University, University affiliated or approved sites. Professional fee billing and collections must be done through the University or a University approved vendor. Outside non-patient care professional activities (e.g. legal/expert witness, consulting) may be undertaken within the limits established in accordance with the Guidelines, as described in department compensation plan procedures.
