The faculty of the School of Medicine at UC Irvine is continually exploring avenues to enhance the overall quality and breadth of the education and training offerings available to our medical students. While the execution of our goals has resulted in our being ranked as one of the top 50 U.S. medical schools for research by U.S. News & World Report, we have much more work to do.
Specifically, while we were early to recognize the evolution of today’s modern physician, whose very survival requires extensive knowledge and expertise in disciplines beyond those traditionally taught in a medical curriculum, our adaptation of educational and training programs has room to expand further. To date, we have already designed and implemented a number of dual-degree programs in order to provide our students with a much richer educational environment. Our medical students at UC Irvine are encouraged to pursue studies in any of a number of related areas such as business management, targeted basic science research and cultural diversity studies. These organized programs, many leading to dual degrees, are intended to augment our students’ medical education and are consistent with the overarching goal of a career in medicine; i.e., to benefit the society we live within. In partnership with other academic units at UC Irvine, we are pleased to offer coursework and dual degree programs in the following areas:
We are also designing and planning the implementation of a number of other dual-degree programs that are needed for tomorrow’s physicians. In the interim, as an institution we are open to providing a flexible environment for all our students to gain expertise in any number of academic disciplines that might enhance their eventual effectiveness as a physician and scientist.
