Postdoctoral Fellowship Incentives and K Awards

The Office of Graduate Studies has established two new incentives designed to encourage more postdoctoral scholars in the School of Medicine to apply for individual fellowships.

The Postdoctoral Individual Fellowship Incentive rewards postdoctoral scholars for submitting a competitive individual fellowship application with a $250 research award, to be used at the scholar's discretion.

A second incentive, called the Postdoctoral K Award Bonus, rewards postdoctoral scholars who have secured a K award from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) with an additional $1,000 research award.

Both incentive awards can be used for travel to conferences, professional development activities, computer or computer-related supplies, or other personal research-related expenses.

The Office of Graduate Studies also offers support for travel and other professional development opportunities.

Incentive Descriptions

Postdoctoral Individual Fellowship Incentive

Upon submission of an outside fellowship application, the postdoc is eligible to apply for a Postdoctoral Individual Fellowship Incentive. As part of this application, the postdoc will need to include:

  • A PDF of the completed outside fellowship application
  • Evidence that the application has been received by the granting agency
  • A letter from the postdoc’s faculty advisor verifying that the fellowship application is competitive.

If approved, the Office of Graduate Studies will provide the administrator of the awardee’s department instructions on how to access the $250 research award on behalf of the postdoctoral fellow.

The $250 incentive is given for first submissions only and cannot be requested for fellowship applications submitted before Feb. 1, 2015.
