Individual Fellowship Application Incentive

The School of Medicine's Office of Graduate Studies has established an incentive plan called the Individual Fellowship Application Incentive designed to encourage more students to apply for individual fellowships. Briefly, this incentive provides a $250 reward to students for submitting an individual fellowship application. If you are a graduate student interested in this incentive, please read the eligibility requirements below.

Incentive Program

Many SOM graduate students would be competitive for individual fellowships, but not all who are eligible actually apply for a fellowship. Accordingly, we have established an incentive designed to encourage more students to apply for individual fellowships. By implementing this plan, it is hoped that a significant number of additional individual fellowships will be awarded to UC Irvine pre-doctoral students.

Plan Description

The Office of Graduate Studies provides a monetary application incentive for students who apply for individual fellowships funded by extramural agencies or foundations. Graduate students who apply for an individual fellowship (e.g., NSF Individual, NIH NRSA or other) will be awarded $250 from our office as a reward for submitting an application.

To qualify for this award, the application must be reviewed prior to submission by the student’s mentor, who must provide a written verification that the application is considered to be competitive. After submission of the grant application, the student will complete an Individual Fellowship Application Incentive Application and provide a PDF of the application to our office.

The incentive reward will be authorized when the student provides evidence that the application has been received by the granting agency. The $250 award is given for first submissions only.

This incentive plan is available to students in any SOM graduate program in which extramural individual fellowship funding is available. To be eligible for the $250 reward for submitting the application, the fellowship award must provide more than half the current base stipend and tuition/fees combined in the student’s program. Applications for and receipt of travel and other small grants will not be eligible for an incentive award under this program.

Applications for pre-doctoral training grant slots offered through UC Irvine will not be considered. Students in programs that require submission of individual fellowship applications as part of that program’s curriculum are also excluded from the incentive plan. In addition, students who receive other sources of fellowship incentives are excluded from this program as well.

To receive the individual fellowship application incentive ($250), complete and submit the Individual Fellowship Application Incentive Application.
