It has been said, “If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will get you there.” An alternative approach drove our strategic planning – selecting a clear vision that builds on our organization’s values, defines our future and guides our work. With broad input and representation, we established a new vision for UC Irvine Health:
Powered by discovery and innovation, UC Irvine Health will
advance individual and population health.
This new vision prominently emphasizes “discovery and innovation,” which truly set UC Irvine Health apart from other community providers. Those of us who serve at an academic medical center lead the way in creating and imparting new knowledge. Whether through basic, translational or clinical research, new teaching approaches, or the establishment of new and best practices for delivering exceptional care, our ability to discover and innovate is the engine that has powered, and will continue to power, our success.
The second half of the vision is equally important, describing our intent to “advance individual and population health.” The distinction between individuals and population is a key point. Advancing individual health involves the interactions of caregivers and staff that result in the best possible outcome for each patient and his or her family. Advancing population health embraces the goals of the Triple Aim—reducing the cost of healthcare, improving the patient experience (quality and satisfaction), and bettering the health of the population who could be residents of our region, people with a specific chronic disease, or HMO members receiving care from UC Irvine Health physicians.
To achieve this vision and provide greater clarity around our intentions; we identified five aspirations to position UC Irvine Health for long-term success:
|Clinical Excellence||Provide excellent care and an exceptional experience|
|Innovative Education||Educate the next generation of healthcare leaders through innovative learning|
|Research Distinction||Achieve distinction across basic, translational, clinical and outcomes research|
|Complex Care Complex Care||Be the region’s top destination for complex care|
|Population Health Manager||Become a leader in population health management|
These aspirations are rooted in our existing strengths at UC Irvine Health, along with areas where we have unique opportunities to assert and distinguish our brand. The best means to do this will be through the alignment of our strategies and work across the aspirations.
