Paolo Casali, MD, Senior Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies
Dr. Paolo Casali: We are dedicated to improving the climate for research
Welcome to the website of Research and Graduate Studies at UC Irvine School of Medicine. We are dedicated to furthering the school"s biomedical research enterprise, enhancing the research climate, facilitating avenues for funding, streamlining research processes and providing innovative graduate studies programs.

Since its founding in 1965, UC Irvine has been set apart by its innovative spirit and strength in research and education. The School of Medicine, established two years later, has grown dramatically over the past four decades, and is now known for its internationally recognized researchers and clinicians.

Last year, UC Irvine Health researchers received more than $165 million in research funding, including $148 million in funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).  Many of the nation’s most innovative biomedical technologies and therapies were developed by School of Medicine researchers.

Our research community boasts a stellar faculty, including a Nobel laureate, five members elected to the National Academy of Sciences, 14 elected Fellows to the American Association for the Advancement of Science and four members elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies.  In all, the school has 553 faculty members, based in five physical science and 20 clinical science departments.

Groundbreaking research takes place in state-of-the-art laboratories in the Biomedical Research Center, the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Beckman Laser Institute, the Institute for Immunology, the Institute for Clinical & Translational Science, the Susan Samueli Center for Integrative Medicine, the Sue & Bill Gross Stem Cell Research Center, the Brain Imaging Center, the Reeve-Irvine Research Center for spinal cord injury, the Gavin Herbert Eye Institute, the Center for Diabetes Research & Treatment, the Center for Virus Research, the Genetic Epidemiology Research Center, the Health Policy Research Institute, the John Tu & Thomas Yuen Center for Functional Onco Imaging, the Center for Occupational & Environmental HealthUCI MIND and the Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center.

We also have research, clinical and teaching relationships with Long Beach Veterans Affairs Medical Center and Long Beach Memorial Medical Center, among others.

Our graduate studies programs, which are home to more than 200 students, include programs in Anatomy & Neurobiology,Biological ChemistryExperimental PathologyMicrobiology & Molecular GeneticsPharmacologyPhysiology & Biophysics,Environmental ToxicologyEpidemiologyGenetic Counseling as well as the Medical Scientist Training Program (MD/PhD).

Our research and educational programs are exciting, but they only hint at what goes on behind the scenes. One of our greatest assets is the collegial, collaborative climate we offer, an atmosphere where faculty and students thrive.
