Suzanne B. Sandmeyer, PhD, UC Irvine School of Medicine's senior associate dean for research, holds the Grace Beekhuis Bell Chair of Biological Chemistry.

Welcome to the website of the Office of Research at UC Irvine School of Medicine. We are dedicated to:

  • Furthering the school's biomedical research enterprise
  • Enhancing the research climate
  • Facilitating avenues for funding
  • Streamlining research processes.

Since its founding in 1965, the University of California, Irvine has been known for its innovative spirit and strength in research and education.

The School of Medicine, established two years later, has grown dramatically in the past four decades. It now is renowned for its internationally recognized researchers and clinicians.

UC Irvine School of Medicine researchers have received more than $165 million in research funding, including $148 million in funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Many of the nation’s most innovative biomedical technologies and therapies have been developed by our School of Medicine researchers.

Our research community boasts a stellar faculty, including a Nobel laureate, five members elected to the National Academy of Sciences, 14 elected fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and four members elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies.

In all, the school has 553 faculty members, based in five physical science and 20 clinical science departments.

We also have research, clinical and teaching relationships with the VA Long Beach Health System and Long Beach Memorial Medical Center, among others.

Our research and educational programs are exciting, but they only hint at what goes on behind the scenes. One of our greatest assets is the collegial, collaborative climate we offer, which creates an atmosphere that allows faculty and students to thrive.
