Elizabeth Hubbard, a physiology and biophysics PhD student has been awarded the UCI Center for the Neurobiology of Learning and Memory’s (CNLM) Jared M. Roberts Memorial Award.

Hubbard received her undergrad degree in biopsychology from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. She then came to UCI with an interest in studying the neurobiology of addiction, and works with professor Kevin Beier.

“Aside from Lizzy’s work in the lab, where she aims to understand how repetitive opiate use leads to persistent aversive states that lead to symptoms of drug withdrawal, Lizzy is committed to community service and education, said Kevin T. Beier, PhD, assistant professor in the Department of Physiology & Biophysics at the UCI School of Medicine. “She donates a substantial amount of her time and effort towards bringing neuroscience education and outreach opportunities to K-12 schools. I think that through both her work in the lab and her volunteer efforts that she personifies the values for which the Jared M. Roberts Memorial Award was established.”

This award will give Hubbard the opportunity to interact with the learning and memory community at the Winter Neurobiology conference in Utah.

“I am currently studying how opioid use leads to long- term changes in the brain, and how these changes can be tracked in specific neuron populations, said Hubbard. “We hope that gaining insight into how these neurons communicate with other brain regions will allow us to better understand opioid addiction and prevent relapse for those in recovery.”

At the conference, Hubbard will see leading research from many universities, ask questions and make connections with the labs conducting it, and use what she learns to better inform her experiments and trajectory during her PhD studies at UCI.

The Jared M. Roberts Memorial Award was established in 2017 by the family, friends and colleagues of Jared Roberts and rewards an exceptional graduate student for outstanding scholarship and collegiality. The award is co-sponsored by UCI’s Graduate Division.
