Dr. Lorna Carlin Scholar Award, 2017 — Call for Nominations

The UC Irvine School of Medicine’s Office of Graduate Studies is pleased to announce the Dr. Lorna Carlin Scholar Award. Each year, one outstanding fellow will be selected through a competitive process based on academic performance and significance of the research.

The Dr. Lorna Carlin Scholar Award recognizes the importance of supporting the next generation of leaders who will shape the future of scientific discovery.

Award information:

The total funding package of $10,000 includes:

Research support totaling $6,500
Professional Development expenditure allocation of $1,000
Summer stipend bonus of $2,500 to be paid directly to the student. This stipend is not to replace an existing stipend, but is intended to be a supplement.

Eligibility:

Nominees must be current UC Irvine PhD students in the School of Medicine
Nominees must be Advanced to Candidacy for the PhD degree
Nominees must have a minimum UC Irvine GPA of 3.7 through Winter 2017
Nominees must be willing to present a seminar on their research, attend donor events and be featured on the School of Medicine Graduate Studies website
Nominees must be available for an interview on May 12, 2017

One research fellow will be selected to receive a $10,000 Dr. Lorna Carlin Scholar Award, with preference given to translational research in:

ALS
Epigenetics
Traumatic brain injury
Chronic traumatic encephalopathy
Degeneration of the brain and how it relates to inflammation

Application process

The completed, signed nomination packet for each nominee should be emailed by the department's Management Services Officer or Chief Administrative Officer to the SOM Office of Graduate Studies.

Each nomination must consist of a single pdf file, and contain the following items in order:

Completed Dr. Lorna Carlin Scholar Award Department Nomination form
Completed Dr. Lorna Carlin Scholar Award Student Information Sheet
Current curriculum vitae
A confidential letter of recommendation from the nominee’s faculty advisor

Each nomination packet must be saved as follows: CARLIN2017-DEPARTMENT NAME-NOMINEE LAST NAME-NOMINEE FIRST NAME. (For example, CARLIN2017-MYDEPARTMENT-ANTEATER-PETER.)

Deadline

The deadline for e-mail receipt of completed/signed nomination pdf packages is Monday, April 10, 2017.
