Description: This all-day presentation is the cornerstone of GWSW’s seminar programs. It comprehensively addresses both practical and conceptual aspects that are important to writing competitive NIH grant proposals. Emphasis is given to doing the “extra” things that can make the difference between success and failure. Participants are taught to write with a linear progression of logic, which leads reviewers through an application without them knowing that they are being led. Coping strategies to overcome the fact that applicants are writing for two different audiences – the assigned reviewers, who read the application in its entirety, and non-assigned reviewers who may have read little, or none, of the proposal before the meeting of the review panel – are emphasized.

Description: This seminar is for Career Development Award (CDA) candidates, in particular, those writing NIH K99/R00, K08, K23 and NRSA (F30, F31, F32) proposals. This workshop emphasizes the partnering between the candidate, mentor, and institution that is necessary to make these proposals successful, resulting in protected time for research. Content of the seminar includes tips and strategies on getting reference letters, selecting and getting the most from a mentor, how to review criteria can be used to inform the writing of a CDA, and the kinds of research and training that should be proposed.

Workshop attendees are expected to be familiar with the basic components and strategies of writing NIH applications. Attendance at the following “pre-workshop” is highly suggested to obtain this foundational information.
